Signing was such an amazing way to communicate with our daughter in those months before she started to speak out loud. Using diagrams and tutorials off the internet, I tried to offer her ways to name the familiar sights in the world around her: the day we walked into a room and saw a woman holding a bouquet of “flowers,” a child holding a “balloon,” and a poster on the wall covered in “stars,” she could hardly control her hands, not sure which wonderful thing to tell me about first! I loved how signing enabled her to share with me what she noticed and what excited her; it also allowed her to express her views in ways we would not have understood, as on the day we were halfway through a long road trip and she started adamantly signing “all done,” a sign she had previously only used at mealtimes but that vividly expressed her sentiments in that moment. Being able to connect with a young child through signing made me really appreciate how much their minds are absorbing and how desperately they long to jump into the conversation with us. I would have loved a class like Blossom ‘n’ Thrive, where we could have shared this experience and benefited from a skilled instructor and a community of signing parents and children. I hope you'll give signing a try!
